VMWare Site Recovery Manager

One of my friend called from Chennai, told that he attended the interview and shared his experience on the same. One of the question asked in interview is about SRM (Site Recovery Manager). I started explaining about the pre-requisites for migration between two sites. Thought of providing some notes on SRM,

Site Recovery Manager:

It is complete disaster orchestration product, also it allows automating the recovery of virtual machines

Some of the salient features are below:

vSphere Replication
Increased Scalability
Planned Migration
Fail-back
Re-protection
Priority Groups

vSphere Replication:

vSphere Replication Copies only the changed blocked replication to the recovery of site.

Planned Migration:

Planned Migration ensures an orderly pre-tested transition from a protected site to a recovery site, it will minimize the data loss. some of the features are below,

Application Migration
Partial Site Migration
Data-Center relocation
Disaster avoidance

Re-protection:

It enables the environment at the recovery site to establish synchronized replication and protectionof the environment back to the original protected site.

Failback:

Failback will run the same workflow that was used to migrate the environment to the protected site. It will guarantee that recovery plan returned to their original environment.

Disaster recovery event:

On Disaster recovery event, initial attempt will be made to shutdown the protection group's virtual machines and establishing the final synchronization between the sites., some of the features are,

Static and quiescent before running the recovery
Minimize data loss.

Priority groups

SRM comes with 5 priority groups.
